A Nigerian hotel restaurant was shut down by authorities after suspicions about the food being served were proven to be true. The restaurant, in Anambra, was closed because it was serving human meat to customers.
According to Eater, police raided the restaurant after hearing rumors about human meat being served. They found fresh human heads that were still being drained of blood in a plastic bag.
Police also found automatic weapons, grenades and piles of cell phones. The hotel owner and ten other people were arrested in connection to the slew of crimes, according to BBC.
Police reportedly found heads wrapped in cellophane with blood still draining out, as well as AK-47 guns and lots of rounds of live ammunition.
A man who spoke to reporters admitted that he was surprised at how expensive his meal had been at the restaurant. He said he paid 700 Naira, or $3.50, for his meal when most Nigerians subsist on less than $1 per day.
He said, “The attendant noticed my reaction and told me it was the small piece of meat I had eaten that made the bill scale that high. I did not know I had been served with human meat, and that it was that expensive."
There is no word yet on what the legal consequences of this will ultimately be.
For a long time reports have been going round in Nigeria that human meat is being sold alongside other meals at food joints, but this is the first time a restaurant is heard specializing in selling human meat only.
Last year, Australian chef Marcus Volke murdered and cooked his girlfriend before killing himself. In Brazil, also last year, a man and two women were arrested for murdering potential nanny candidates and then cooking their flesh into empanadas.
