Obama to name first US envoy to Somalia in 20 years
President Barack Obama is set to name the first American ambassador to Somalia since the start of the brutal civil war more than 20 years ago, a top diplomat said Tuesday.
Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman made the announcement Tuesday at the U.S. Institute of Peace.
She said the Obama administration decided to reinstate an ambassador in Somalia based on its deepening relationship with the country and the "faith that better times are ahead."
U.S. President Barack Obama has not said who he will nominate for the position. The United States has not had an ambassador in Mogadishu since it closed its mission on Jan. 5, 1991.
