At least 40 dead in India passenger train crash

At least 40 people are dead and more than 150 injured, after a passenger express train slammed into a stationary freight train in northern India.
Authorities said the Gorakhpur Express passenger train, travelling from Hisar city to Gorakhpur, slammed into a parked freight train at Chureb railway station in Khalilabad in Uttar Pradesh state Monday, killing at least 40 people.
At least 150 people were injured, including the express train\’s driver and assistant driver, who were in critical condition, railway official Alok Kumar said in an AP report.
Officials say six of the trains cars were derailed in the crash.
Accidents are common on India\’s railroad network, one of the world\’s largest. Most of the accidents are blamed on poor maintenance and human error.
Narendra Modi, who was to be sworn in as India\’s new prime minister later Monday, sent condolences to the families of the victims.
