Three Palestinians were killed in the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank early on Saturday after Israeli soldiers launched an operation to arrest a militant, Palestinian officials said.
Israel says its forces went to a home in the Jenin refugee camp Saturday to capture a Hamas Islamist militant who was a suspect in past attacks on Israel.
Palestinian officials say the Israeli military surrounded the house and ordered Hamza Abu el-Heija outside.
The military says the suspect refused and opened fire, wounding two Israeli soldiers. The military returned fire and killed the militant.
Israel say protesters gathered on the site and attacked the soldiers. The troops opened fire, killing three Palestinians.
Tensions have been heating up in the area in recent months amid a lack of progress in the Middle East peace talks. The talks resumed last July after a three-year lull.
