Indian officials say a stampede in a crowd gathered to mourn the death of a religious leader has killed 18 people.
Authorities in Mumbai say at least 40 people were also injured in the incident early Saturday outside the home of Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, the head of the Dawoodi Bohra Muslim community.
Burhanuddin died Friday. He was 102 years old.
It was not immediately clear what triggered the stampede. Such events occur frequently in India, and are usually attributed by authorities to poor police crowd control.
