Egypt security forces storm Kerdassah, police officer killed
Photo: Agence France-PresseA senior police officer was killed when Egyptian security forces stormed a village outside Cairo Thursday in the latest crackdown on militants, while unexploded bombs on the tracks briefly halted Cairo\’s metro.
Military and police vehicles surrounded Kerdassah in the shadow of landmark pyramids after dawn, as police special forces were deployed to confront "terrorists" in the village, the interior ministry said.
Giza security chief Nabil Farrag was killed in clashes while 32 people were arrested in the operation.
Authorities slapped a daytime curfew on the village as they went door to door in search of 140 wanted men, including those behind a "massacre" in Kerdassah in which 11 policemen were killed on August 14.
State television says security forces stormed the village of Kerdassah early Thursday, firing tear gas and exchanging gunfire with militants.
Last month\’s violence in Kerdassah, an Islamist stronghold, came hours after security forces cleared two camps of supporters of deposed Islamist President Mohamed Morsi.
At least 1,000 people have been killed during the Egyptian military\’s crackdown against militants and supporters of Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood. Egyptian officials have described the campaign as a "war on terror."
Highlighting that threat, Egyptian authorities on Thursday said they found two unexploded, primitive bombs that had been placed on the tracks of the Cairo Metro. State media said parts of the metro line have been shut down while authorities investigate.
