Clashes erupt in Cairo as Morsi supporters march
Morsi supporters went to a government compound to protest at the appointment of army officers as local governors. ReutersEgyptian police fired tear gas to break up clashes between supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi and residents of a central Cairo neighbourhood, security sources said.
Supporters of the new military-installed government hurled stones at the marchers and threw bottles at them from balconies. Police then fired tear gas at the pro-Morsi protesters.
A few thousand pro-Morsi protesters were taking part in the march when the trouble erupted. Local residents taunted them, calling them terrorists and saying they were not welcome. They then began throwing stones at them.
The Morsi supporters responded by also hurling rocks.
Women and children marchers fled the scene in panic. Two men wielding machetes were seen chasing marchers.
The protesters are calling for the reinstatement of Morsi, who was overthrown by the military on July 3 and now is being held at undisclosed location.
Tuesday\’s trouble began when crowds of Morsi\’s supporters marched to an area of Cairo that houses several government buildings, and is also home to many people who oppose the Muslim Brotherhood.
The protesters were angry because at least 15 former military officers have been sworn in as local governors.
The demonstrators tried to get into a government compound, but were forced out and then clashed with local residents and police.
Women and children fled the scene, as both sides threw bottles and stones at each other.
Witnesses said residents pelted the demonstrators from balconies, taunting them by calling them terrorists.
The army deposed Morsi in July and put in place an interim government.
