A top public hospital in Singapore says four renal patients have died in one of its wards from hepatitis C and 18 others contracted the virus, likely from intravenous treatment.
The Singapore General Hospital apologized for the deaths in a statement Tuesday. It said all 22 patients were admitted to a new ward in the hospital between April and June while the original renal ward was being renovated.
It said most of the patients had undergone kidney transplants.
The hospital said its initial investigation indicated that the infections may have come from intravenous injectable agents. It said it has since taken precautionary measures, including stopping long-established hospital practices such as multi-dosing.
