Fire swept through a nursing home before dawn in Mexico on Tuesday, killing at least 16 residents, an official said.
Another five seniors were injured and one was listed as missing after the blaze at the home in a rural area outside Mexicali on the US border, mayor Jaime Diaz Ochoa.
The "Beautiful Dawn" nursing home had a total of 44 residents, he said.
Rescue crews were working at the scene to determine the cause of the blaze, which broke out around 4 am.
In June 2009, a fire at a state-subsidized day care facility killed 49 babies. That triggered an uproar as it emerged that the facility did not meet even minimal safety standards.
