Violent protests have erupted in the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir after a civilian and a militant were killed in an encounter with the army in the troubled Himalayan region.
Top local police official Nitish Kumar said Tuesday that the two men were killed in military operations. He gave no details of the encounter, which took place late Monday near the southern town of Tral.
Relatives and angry locals, however, said the civilian was tortured to death, leading to protests Tuesday in which at least 15 people were injured.
Kumar said one of the men who was killed was a known militant and the other a civilian who was the brother of a militant.
The Indian army said only one person — a militant — was killed in the incident.
