Three police officers were shot dead and two others injured on Wednesday in a rare case of gun violence in the east coast Canadian province of New Brunswick, officials said.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police say the shooting occurred in the city of Moncton, when police responded to a call about an armed man wearing camouflage clothes. The suspected gunman has been identified as 24-year-old Justin Bourque.

The two wounded officers are in stable condition at a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Mass shootings are rare in Canada, which has strict gun control laws.  Wednesday\’s attack was the deadliest on Canadian police officers since 2005, when four RCMP officers were gunned down in the town of Mayerthorpe in western Alberta province.
