Northern Ireland police arrest Gerry Adams over 1972 murder
Northern Ireland republican leader Gerry Adams spends the night in police custody after being arrested in connection with the 1972 murder of a mother of 10.Northern Ireland police say they have arrested Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams on suspicion of involvement in the Irish Republican Army\’s 1972 abduction, killing and secret burial of a Belfast widow.
Sinn Féin leader Adams continues to be questioned by Northern Ireland police in connection with the 1972 murder of Jean McConville.
Adams has spent the night in custody after going to Antrim police station, where he was arrested.
McConville, a 37-year-old widow and mother-of-10, was abducted and shot by the IRA.
Her body was recovered from a beach in County Louth in 2003.
The 65-year-old Adams repeatedly has denied any involvement in the Jean McConville case. She was abducted by the Provisional Irish Republican Army from her Belfast home and shot to death.
Adams confirmed his interview with police in a prepared statement late Wednesday. He declared his innocence and described his contact with police as voluntary and pre-arranged. Police later said he had been arrested.
Authorities have long sought to query Adams about the death of McConville, a 38-year-old executed by the IRA as an accused spy for the British army. Her body was secretly buried and found decades later on a beach in the Republic of Ireland.
Historians and witnesses say Adams served as an IRA commander for decades during the 40-year conflict, which pitted independence-seeking Republicans against pro-British unionists.
Adams has always denied holding any position in the outlawed group, despite accusations from an IRA veteran who said McConville was killed on Adams\’ orders.
