Two Spanish journalists freed in Syria
Javier Espinosa (L) and Ricardo Garcia Vilanova were seized by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS)Two Spanish journalists were freed by their kidnappers in Syria after more than six months in captivity, Spain\’s El Mundo newspaper reported.
El Mundo said Sunday reporter Javier Espinosa and photographer Richard Garcia Vilanova are now in Turkey.
The two were kidnapped in September by the al-Qaida-linked group the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS).
Espinosa has been a Middle East correspondent for El Mundo since 2002 and is based in Beirut.
Vilanova has worked for various news outlets including the New York Times, the Washington Post and the AFP news agency.
No details about the journalists\’ health or the conditions of their release were made available.
The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists said earlier this month Syria is the most dangerous country in the world for journalists.
More than 140,000 people have been killed and another 2.5 million have fled the country since Syria\’s civil war began in March 2011.
The conflict started with mass street protests against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and turned into an insurgency after a violent crackdown on demonstrators.
