There has been a spate of attacks on security forces amid a crackdown on Islamists.
Several army police officers have been killed in an attack on a checkpoint on the outskirts of Cairo, Egyptian state media report.
The state news agency said gunmen opened fire at the checkpoint on Saturday morning.
It was the latest in a series of attacks on security forces across Egypt in recent months.
A soldier was shot dead as armed men attacked an army bus in the capital on Thursday. The military accused armed men belonging to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood of staging the attack,
The group strongly condemned the attack, saying the targeting of army soldiers and civilians is a "heinous crime that requires a thorough and transparent investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice".
