Syria rebels seize al-Qaida base in Aleppo
Syrian rebels have captured the Aleppo headquarters of an al-Qaida-linked group that wants to establish an Islamic state in Syria, while that group threatens to crush other opposition fighters.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Islamist rebels took control of the base Wednesday in the northern city from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
An ISIL spokesman said in an audio tape posted late Tuesday that the group would crush rebel fighters, and that members of the main opposition Syrian National Coalition were also targets.
The message came hours after the head of the Nusra Front, another al-Qaida-linked group, called for a truce in the fighting among rebel factions that are trying to gain control in different parts of Syria.
ISIL has been trying to solidify its power by eliminating smaller rival groups in pursuit of its goal of an Islamic state. The jihadists reject compromise with the Syrian government and say moderate opposition figures willing to attend a peace conference in Geneva this month do not represent them.
