Pakistan rearrests ex-president Musharraf over Red Mosque deaths
usharraf returned to Pakistan from self-imposed exile earlier this year.Pakistani police have re-arrested former president Pervez Musharraf over the raid of an Islamabad mosque in 2007.
In the latest charge, Musharraf is accused of ordering a 2007 commando operation against a Islamabad mosque to crack down on armed militants. The raid left a cleric and several other people dead.
A complaint against Musharraf in the so-called Red Mosque case was registered two weeks ago on the orders of a judge.
The arrest came after the former president had been granted bail in three other cases and his lawyer said he was free to leave the country.
One of the cases is a murder charge in connection with the assassination of opposition leader and former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. She was killed in a gun and bomb attack after leaving a political rally in Rawalpindi in December 2007.
Musharraf has pleaded not guilty to the charges, which include murder, conspiracy to murder and facilitation of murder.
The former leader has blamed Bhutto\’s assassination on Taliban militants and said he warned her of militant threats to her safety.
Musharraf took power in a 1999 coup and ruled as president until resigning under threat of impeachment by his opponents in 2008 and going into exile.
He returned to Pakistan in March after nearly four years in self-imposed exile in a bid to resurrect his political career.
