A suicide bomber drove a truck packed with explosives into the playground of a primary school in northern Iraq and blew himself up, killing 14 students and their headmaster on Sunday, police and medical sources said.
The explosions Sunday – the beginning of the local work week – partially collapsed an elementary school, killing at least 15 children. Another blast struck a nearby police station.
Authorities say scores of people were wounded in the blasts in the village of Qabat, just outside Tal Afar near the Syrian border.
There has been no immediate claim of responsibility for the bombings.
The blasts come a day after violence, including an attack on Shi\’ite pilgrims in Baghdad and a suicide bombing at a cafe north of the capital, killed more than 65 people in a string of attacks across Iraq.
Militants have stepped up attacks in recent months on cafes and other public gathering places, including mosques, funerals and busy market places.
Deadly violence has climbed to its highest level since 2008, with analysts repeatedly expressing fears the country is sliding back into Sunni-Shi\’ite civil war.
More than 6,000 people have been killed in violence across the country this year, according to monitoring group Iraq Body Count, reversing a decline in sectarian bloodshed that had climaxed in 2006-07.
