A boat has sunk on the River Niger in central Nigeria, leaving at least 42 people dead, officials say. Rescue teams are searching for a further 100 people reported missing, an emergency agency official said.
Niger State emergency officials said Saturday that 42 bodies had been recovered from the accident, which took place on Friday.
An emergency official say the boat was designed carry about 50 people.
There is no word on what caused the accident. However, villagers said the boat may have hit a tree in a shallow part of the river.
Investigators said the boat was packed with traders who travel to a weekly market in the riverside town of Malale.
