Three Taliban fighters have been killed during an attack on a U.S. base near the Pakistani border.
Authorities say the insurgents struck the base early Monday in Torkham in Nangarhar province, resulting in explosions and a gunbattle that lasted more than three hours. Several vehicles were set on fire in a parking lot, but officials say the attackers did not get inside the base.
Officials say part of the highway, an important route for NATO supply trucks, has been closed.
NATO officials say none of its personnel were killed.

The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The Taliban has escalated its attacks in recent weeks, a surge that comes as U.S.-led foreign troops reduce their presence in Afghanistan ahead of a full withdrawal by the end of next year.
