Egypt to put ex-president Mohammed Morsi on trial
Egypt\’s public prosecutor on Sunday ordered former President Morsi to stand trial on charges of committing and inciting violence.
The public prosecutor is quoted as saying Morsi will be tried with 14 other suspects.
The charges stem from fighting between Morsi supporters and opponents outside the presidential palace last December. Seven people were killed. The date for the trial is yet to be announced.
Morsi has not been seen in public since the military drove him from power on July 3. The pro-Islamist Muslim Brotherhood, which is demanding Morsi\’s reinstatement, set up two large protest camps in Cairo.
Fourteen other members of the Muslim Brotherhood are to stand trial on the same charges.
Morsi has been held at a secret location since he was deposed in July.
A police raid on those camps in in late July killed hundreds of civilians. The Brotherhood puts the death toll in the thousands.
The military has set up an interim government. It promises to hold new elections and amend the Islamist-drafted constitution.
Interim President Adly Mansour has announced a 50-member panel to discuss proposed changes to the constitution.
Liberals and secularists make up the majority of the panel. Five women and Catholic and Coptic church officials also are included. They are set to hold their first meeting September 8.
Morsi\’s supporters say they were defending the palace after being attacked by opposition activists.
The ousted president has previously been accused of the "premeditated murder of some prisoners, officers and soldiers" when he and several Muslim Brotherhood leaders were freed during a breakout at a Cairo prison in January 2011.
