A Russian warship quietly slipped into Cuban waters this week and was docked in the Havana harbor Thursday, a day after Russia\’s defense minister announced plans to expand that country\’s worldwide military presence.
The Viktor Leonov CCB-175, which is part of the Vishnya class of intelligence ships, sat tied up at a cruise ship terminal, where it drew looks from passers-by.
Cuban official media made no immediate mention of the ship\’s port call.
In Moscow Wednesday, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Russia plans to increase its military presence abroad, including in Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela.
Russia also put 150,000 troops on high alert in central and western Russia, including areas bordering Ukraine. Moscow denied the drill was linked to unrest in Ukraine.
